Motokiki help motorists by giving free tyre health checks.

October is national ‘tyre safety month’ and staff at Motokiki, the UK’s impartial tyre comparison site, have been offering free tyre checks to members of the public.

Not only is it important to promote tyre safety, but drivers found it useful to be shown how they can check their tyres regularly.

Alarmingly, the majority of people who took advantage of the free tyre check, admitted that they never check the health of their tyres. More than half didn't know how to.

When told that more people are seriously injured or killed on our roads by defective tyres than the use of mobile phones, drivers were shocked and agreed how important it is to make sure our tyres are in a good, healthy state.

By completing the 20p tread depth check and checking the air pressure with a gauge, we helped drivers identify various problems with their tyres. One driver needed to go and get their wheel alignment checked as the tyres were showing wear on just one side.

One driver was oblivious to the nail that was stuck in one of their tyres and another motorist was driving around with just over half of their cars recommended tyre pressure level. This can affect the handling of the vehicle and can cause serious problems later down the line.

It confirms that there are a lot of drivers who don't understand the importance of regular tyre checks. We wouldn’t expect a pilot to take off without doing his relevant checks, therefore we should make sure our tyres are in a fit state to keep ourselves and others safe on our roads.

Having healthy tyres will help motorists stay safe but also save money. Having incorrect alignment and/or incorrect levels of pressure can cause the tyres to wear down quicker which means you will be replacing them sooner than you think. It will also hurt your purse at the pump as the car will become less fuel efficient.

Motokiki urge all drivers to check the health on their tyres once a month and/or before a long journey. Tyres are the only part of the car that keep us in contact with the road… It’s so important to give them some attention and complete checks. They only take a few minutes.
