For residents living near busy main roads, it can get quite annoying and uncomfortable to have to listen to noisy vehicles day in day out. New limits were set in 2012 about the standards of noisy vehicles. You can get noise efficient tyres which produce low sound levels when driving giving you a much quieter ride.
You can check the noise efficiency on the tyre label, this is displayed on every new tyre for sale. It's important to keep in mind that the label’s grading is based on what you hear outside of the car… not the noise you hear whilst inside.
The tyres displaying the lowest volume on the sound bar are the ones that are the most noise efficient.External rolling noise is displayed as per the below:
- 3 black bars: above future EU limit
- 2 black bars: meets future EU limit
- 1 black bar: at least 3 dB below the future EU limit
If certain rating factors such as noise efficiency is important to you, check out our guide to comparing tyres.
